Artist Statement

I work with a process involving Yupo paper, India ink, alcohol inks and acrylic paint. The imagery is strongly influenced by a variety of sources in my natural surroundings in the high desert of New Mexico. Water patterns and dried branches scattered about the local mountain and desert trails inform my most recent work. The process involves both addition and subtraction of image and pattern, and there is an intentional amount of randomness and unpredictability with the final results. Through the use of a sinuous tangle of lines of various weights, against a black backdrop, and cut out geometric shapes applied to the surface of the painting, I hope to create a tapestry of brushstrokes that will create endless intrigue for the viewer, resulting in an ambiguity of dimension, space, and mystery.
