About
Stephen Battle began painting in college, alongside earning a degree in Anthropology. After graduating, he moved to Jackson, WY, and while in that part of the country spent much of his time in the wilderness of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Nature became the primary inspiration for his work.
Pursuing his art and career, Battle moved to Taos, NM, then Brooklyn, NY, and then Fort Worth, TX where he attended graduate school at Texas Christian University and received an M.F.A. in Painting.
In addition to exhibiting his work, Battle teaches at the college level. He was an instructor of Design and Color at Texas Christian University for several years, and is a member of the visual arts faculty at Tarrant County College where he has taught Drawing, Painting, Design, and Art Appreciation. Stephen recently moved back to Taos, NM to be closer to the spirit and natural environment that fuels his work. He is represented by Gut Gallery in Dallas, TX.
Artist Statement
My work is comprised of several series, each exploring their own specific concepts. At the core of my art is an interest is the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical. Some series investigate each of these independently, while others contrast or merge them. My deeper intention is toward a unified contemplation of physical and spiritual awareness.
