About

Rachel Popowcer is a mixed media oil painter and photographer who received her BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University and her MFA from The University of NM. Her artwork over the years has been influenced by the beauty and spaciousness of NM, and much of her inspiration comes from the colors and forms in nature, as well as visual narratives around the complexity and connection inherent in the human experience. Rachel teaches Art Studio college classes at CNM, and other positions have included the UNM Art Department, UNM’s Continuing Education Program, The NM Cancer Center, The NM Art League, and more. She currently shows at Lapis Room Gallery in Albuquerque and is busy in the studio creating new work.

Artist Statement

My work evolves from a focus on what makes us vulnerable and an interest in visual narrative. I’m fascinated with dissecting the human experience and the ways in which we’re all connected. In my oil paintings, I seek to translate and manage life events that are difficult or unexplainable. My paintings, specifically, depict the often-common struggle with chaos and control. The writing and woodburning relates to obsession, meditation, and ritual. Hatch marks record time and important numeric events. Lines run through the work to create wavelengths and stability. The painted color fields come from a place of intuition and freedom. Weaving through all of that is this idea of an ordinary magic that permeates every aspect of our lives. The magic that keeps us hopeful. Ultimately, I’m creating a space where symbolic language can elevate my pieces from the personal to the universal.
