About

Born in Indianapolis, as a young artist I came to realize that magic and art share creative attributes. A sense of wonder. Conjuring something from nothing. I studied Animation and Cartooning and received a Screen Cartoonist’s Guild Award for my senior animation short. After NYU's Film School I relocated to Los Angeles. Working at Hanna-Barbera Studios on Saturday morning cartoons I was also spending more and more time painting. Deciding I preferred the autonomous solitude of the studio, I returned to New York City to pursue painting. In addition to film and animation I worked at Milton Glaser’s studio. I apprenticed letterpress printing at Oliphant Press with Ron Gordon and created large scale showroom graphics for Knoll. I am fascinated with ancient human expression and have traveled to study stelae and cairns in the British Isles, stone carvings in Sweden and petroglyphs in the American southwest.

Artist Statement

We experience the world through the trinity of mind, body and spirit. This series of paintings embody that interaction. Intended as meditative the work may appear deceptively simple at first. However, upon continued viewing the luminous color and seductive shapes exhibit movement and weight connecting with us not only intellectually and emotionally but physically as well. This work seeks complexity through simplicity. Much abstract work can be dense and busy with color, texture and imagery. When coupled with an allusive title this often leads to a desire on the part of the viewer to discern the meaning of an abstract work. How the shapes and colors narrate the title. When we gaze at a flower we do not search for meaning in the flower’s beauty. We just feel the joy of its color and form. These paintings are meant to be experiences in and of themselves. Color and form without the encumbrance of meaning, existing on a purely visceral level.
