About
John Hegener (b. 1970) is an abstract painter working in acrylic and mixed media. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning in 1993 with a BFA in painting. John lives and works in Taos NM.
Artist Statement
I don’t have a choice. Art is something I have to make. To participate with, ask questions of, contemplate, become frustrated with, procrastinate around, sacrifice for and dedicate to. And whilst doing so, battle the voices in my Aspergers brain of doubt and judgement, disrupting any sense of quiet confidence I desire to bring to my practice. Keep going. Then, that hit of something new yet familiar. A sense of relief and achievement, recognizing the actual work has silenced the voices in my head. The piece is finished. Feeling confident, I repeat the practice. Go further. My paintings are a dive beneath what we perceive.
