About

Tony Buchen and Jazzmean Goodwin began a collaboration in 1980 in Santa Fe. N.M. where they worked primarily in constructed metal sculpture. In 1989 they became artists in-residence at Sloss Furnaces, an industrial museum in Birmingham, Alabama. The long-term residency allowed them to experiment extensively with the exceptional computer related technology of the city’s metal industry. This way of working provoked new concepts regarding the medium of sculpture; one in which physicality was not an issue; one in which photography was the key ingredient. 1999-2003 they lived/worked on the island of Corsica where they utilized a cyber-medium exclusively, developing virtual objects as subjects to be explored photographically, as stills and video. This photography was first exhibited in 2001 with the Claude Dorval Gallerie in Paris. 2003-2005 they lived in New Orleans, LA. Their first video work was shown there in 2003 with The Canal Street Projection Project: Nightworks. In 2006 they returned to NM where they continue to explore the medium of virtual photography.

Artist Statement

The focus of our long-term collaboration has been a fascination with the apparently simple object. In 2002 we essentially left the physical realm to work exclusively in virtual space - developing sculptural objects as subjects for the photography unique to that arena. Exploring this medium has allowed us to relate to objects in unprecedented ways. No matter how minimal an object appears, if there is an inner complexity, a labyrinth of imagery unfolds. We have a strong sense of intimacy with our subjects. They tend to reveal their secrets in the language of abstraction.
