Artist Statement

My paintings stem from a reflection of nature, especially through experiences felt with the gradients of the sky. Living in the high desert, I often think of water and my use of water as the main facilitator of pigment in my paintings. However I see the element of air most prominently in the work; the history of water is there but in its evaporated state. I do see the work as being reminiscent of waterways. There is an echoing and mirroring of the gradients that relate to the light reflected and refracted in water. I begin the work with photographs I have taken, and digitally cut and layer them to create an abstracted drawing. I then paint this image, often as many as fifteen times, on translucent silk. The final composition comes from physically layering them. The shapes and forms are pulled from visual interpretations of energies and movements: connecting, emanating, absorbing, and flowing.
