Currently Veronica lives in Santa Fe , New Mexico where her work explores the relationship we have to soil as an integral material that connects us to places, food, our deceased and histories of the earth. Healthy soil (and water) are boundaries for life.
nutrition, the earth’s past and when properly managed can play an integral role in saving this planet from climate collapse. Currently she resides in Chicago IL and hopes to elaborate on the visual language of soil and explore new ways to engage with it.
Artist Statement
My work is about honoring the soilfrom underneath us. I have a lot of environmental anxieties about soil. Polluted with petroleum, lead, plastics, and pesticides our water and soil absorbs our capitalist sin. These elements are essential to the survival of all natural things and deserved to be worshiped as a divine source that gives, forgives, and creates all things. While water is essential to the boundaries of life, soil keeps the history of the earth, carries records of species we couldn’t dream of, stores our dead, feeds our food and is essential in the fight against climate change.
I make portraits of dirt and soil by using what it’s made of. I push the soil/dirt around a raw canvas using water and Matt medium. I believe the role of a visual artist is to elaborate on the visual language for the human experience. This work is about bringing the soil to eye level inviting the viewer to meditate with this material.
This work gives people the opportunity to reflect on their relationship with soil whether it be personal, environment, political or in wonderment.
