About
I was born in New Jersey and lived, studied and worked in the New York City area for most of my life until 1989 when I relocated to Taos which has been my home ever since. I received foundational art training at Pratt Institute; subsequently I received a BA degree in English lit., and a BFA in studio painting, from Fairleigh Dickinson Univ. and Florida International Univ., respectively. I have been represented in shows and galleries in the New York metro area, Delaware, Atlanta, Miami, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos. My work is in private collections in all of those locations. Locally, I have been in several shows at the Millicent Rogers Museum and the Harwood Museum. In 2018, I was the featured artist for June in the Harwood’s Studio 238. I have been a member of the Taos art community since 1987 when my representation in Bryan’s Gallery preceded my move to Taos by a couple of years. Since its 2022 inaugural exhibition, I have been a proud member of the Taos Abstract Artist Collective. Decades of my art work can be seen on my website TomRogersArt.com.
Artist Statement
My focus is on color and pattern and their relationships within geometrically ordered designs, seemingly random organic forms and fields. My painting process is at times opaque and hard-edged, and, at times more painterly, modulated and atmospheric. My design process includes developing sketches with computer technology as well as old-fashioned mechanical drafting. Likewise, my color palettes are arrived at via color pencil and painted sketches and, also, computer work where I can change color fields with a click of a mouse. Mixing paint, making new colors is a real pleasure in itself
In the 1980’s, in NYC’s lower east side, there was the Fun Gallery showing graffiti artists including Kieth Haring and Kenny Scharf whose works were clearly humorous. As serious as I am about my work, delight is a key ingredient. Years ago, I used code letters and numbers to title my abstract work but I realized word titles give each painting a unique identity. The titles are at times absurdist - for the fun of it - and other times they are a reference to my conceptual idea.
