About
Robert Hoerlein is a mixed media artist living in Santa Fe NM. He holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
His paintings have been exhibited in commercial galleries, university galleries, and museums across the US. Solo exhibitions have been at Zane Bennett Gallery in Santa Fe, Moberg Gallery in Des Moines, Lawson Gallery in San Francisco, Mills Gallery at Central College in Pella Iowa, and at ICON Gallery in Fairfield, Iowa.
Group shows include G2 Gallery Santa Fe, The Drawing Center In New York City, Scott Hanson Gallery in New York City, Zane Bennett Gallery in Santa Fe, The Des Moines Art Center, Moberg Gallery in Des Moines, the Palm Springs Desert Museum in California, Coe College in Cedar Rapids Iowa, The Taos Abstract Artist Collective in Taos NM, and Strata Gallery in Santa Fe, among others.
His work has been featured in The San Francisco Chronicle, the Des Moines Register, the Albuquerque Journal, the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette, and other publications. His artworks are included in many corporate and private collections.
Artist Statement
In the series “none can exhaust the body" I combine graphite, paint, paper, and mixed media to form a sort of “body”, a body of paint. Painted areas impact each other to find balance or imbalance, tension or resonance. I work out very specific color interactions.
If spatial illusions begin to dominate, I push the painting back towards non-representation, to a fine balance between literal paint and painted illusion.
Not a representation of anything, not an abstraction from anything; the structure remains essential, vital; accumulating on the surface to construct a kind of pictorial space. The completed artwork is the conjunction of the real material and the interaction with you, the viewer.
