Olive L Tyrrell is a multi-disciplinary artist, born in Philadelphia & lived in San Francisco for 18 years studying Art History and working in various mediums including photography, painting, welding, and lighting before settling in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2008.
As an expressionist she works in the mediums of paint, photography, clay, and food. She has run a restaurant in Santa Fe, New Mexico for the last 15 years. She is a self taught across all mediums she works in.
Olive works with paint & clay gesturally and in a quick manner, while with intention and decisiveness. She works intuitively; her works are inspired by the surrounding landscape of the New Mexico desert. She seeks to connect the material to the place, while considering form through expression.
“I consider myself an expressionist and work gesturally whether in paint or clay.
In exploring the materiality in both mediums, I see a crossover in much of the work in the two practices + processes. I’m exploring the connection and contrasting nature of these materials through my current sculpture and mixed media painting. Through this exploration I am studying the landscape I live in.
Artist Statement
My work is process oriented Its about exploring material whether in paint or clay I find pleasure in contrast…. in heaps of paint / dirt / clay & then also very quiet surfaces I am challenged by contrast + duality in my work When clay looks like fabric, when paint becomes sculpture When a lonely paper becomes a kite Through that materiality I am engaged in an ongoing dialogue to do with the elemental which explores & is connected to sense of place & the surrounding desert I live in I work gesturally while with intention I am not afraid to ruin a piece through the element of chance & risk I find pleasure in the element of risk My work is to do with mountains, sky, stones, and seas, and the female form It’s an investigation, a secret language, a self examination, an exploration of place, a dialogue with this land
