About
Been making images, mostly with pastel, for the last 40 plus years. Moved to northern New Mexico as a teenager and knew I was home and have stayed here ever since. The images that happen on my table are almost always inspired by the natural beauty and wonder around me, and by the people and communities I care about. I am not an “abstract” artist in any traditional sense, though I am not a “realist” either. Some of the images that come forth on my paper are pared down to what I see or feel is more an essence of what is before me, and seem more “abstract”. I can not separate myself from what I see or what happens when pastel colors start being blended and moved around. I dont think much about an image and find incredible freedom in not knowing what might happen in just letting the shapes and colors happen on a few simple structures.
Artist Statement
Making art is just a way for me to be in this world and interact with all I see, hear, dream, wonder about and feel. I love pastels because I can use them in a very tactile way, rubbing and smoothing, shading and shaping everything with my fingers. Dry pastel colors are so pure and vibrant, often almost pure pigment. It is quite something just to hold those colors in ones hand, and then have them move right into the paper.
