About
M.A. Havens is a contemporary artist and painter who lives in Taos. Many years ago she embarked on a dual pursuit of fine-art and conventional education. In Pennsylvania she completed secondary fine art studies, continued life science studies at Seton Hill College, graduated from the Pittsburgh Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. Taking a three-year sabbatical from her career in Southern California, she studied oil painting with Chouinard artist Jay Hastings. During this apprenticeship she was commissioned to paint landscapes of historical homes, florals and animals. Then she returned to her nursing practice and concurrently exhibited and sold oils, watercolors, mixed media and acrylics of landscapes, seascapes, animals, florals and abstract imagery. Currently she paints in her Taos studio, and her art is held in private collections in New York, California, Georgia and North Carolina.
Artist Statement
I began coloring with crayons on newspaper when I was four years old and the drawings were undulated and multicolored without form. Then I progressed to vivid watercolors, representational oils, mixed media and acrylics. I was happy to color with my crayons just as I continued to be excited to make art with other media and try something new. Nature and my feelings inspire me. I felt blessed to have seen surf crashing on rocky shores, surging waves, the eternal scope of the Pacific, panoramic skies, palm trees ,whales, dolphins, black bears and peacocks on the west coast. I feel gratified to experience New Mexico's majestic landscapes, weather, four seasons, brilliant skyscapes, the luminous light of Taos, place and people. My feelings continue to grow, to be inspired, and to create art.
