About
Bernice Suazo Naranjo is known for her elegant and finely detailed sgraffito carving on a dramatic sienna finish. Both the carving and sienna finish require multiple specialized and time-consuming steps to achieve. With the traditional hand-coiling of the pot, the carving, and the multi-stage outdoor firing process, each piece represents many, many hours of skilled work.
She is originally from Taos Pueblo, and married to Tito Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo. She is a sister-in-law of Jody Folwell and Nora Naranjo-Morse. Bernice is also the mother of Caroline Elliot, Dusty Naranjo, and the grandmother of Johnathan Naranjo.
Artist Statement
I have been an artist almost all the time, and I have done clay work in the early 80s!! I also received my BA degree in fine arts and a minor in Special education at Highland University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. I received my Master’s Degree in education administration two years later. I taught art Special ed classes for nearly nineteen years at Las Vegas Schools and Mora Schools, where I took an early retirement in 2003. I have exhibited for many years, both during and after my teaching career. Over the past two years, I have expanded into painting and hope to concentrate more on this area. I am a multi-artist with many other interests, and I rarely get bored.
I look forward to exploring a new dimensionality within my art practice.
