About
Aarin Richard is an artist in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As a painter, his work is centered in abstract and abstract landscape, which attempts to redefine how we perceive the physical world around us. His work is in numerous private collections.
Aarin began studying art in high school, where influential teachers set him on a course of creativity. Visual arts took a detour when music became the focus and upon arriving in Los Angeles, he began a career as a musician, composer and producer. He was hired by Walt Disney Imagineering and later Sony Development, creating music and innovative three dimensional sound design for major projects worldwide. During this period, he also co-founded an experimental movement theater company known as Fred’s House, which performed at numerous events and festivals.
Moving to Santa Fe in 2009, Aarin joined a long established gallery known as The Spanish & Indian Trading Company. Eventually that became the Aarin Richard Gallery, featuring his own paintings as well as historic American Indian art. The gallery put up several well received shows, notably, Painted Hide, Painted Canvas and Winter Arroyos de Santa Fe.
Artist Statement
Art can offer us opportunities to move beyond our preconceived notions and see the world in new ways. Creativity arises from an openness to those possibilities and for me, the medium can be interchangeable. It’s all about self-expression and communication, whether it be painting, photography, music or performance.
The act of creating is also the act of asking questions, though not necessarily as a conscious effort within the creative process itself. At its best, it is a summoning of various powers, inspirations and queries and with a bit of luck, a certain alchemy occurs, sometimes beyond that of what the human creator can conjure alone.
As a painter, my process starts somewhere between pure spontaneity and loosely planned. I don’t try to force a predetermined vision as I usually find that the paint and canvas have things to say along the journey… I consider them collaborators.
