Robert Hoerlein is a painter living in Santa Fe NM. Raised in Colorado, Hoerlein holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His paintings have been exhibited in commercial galleries, university galleries, and museums in New York, Santa Fe, San Francisco, and Des Moines, among others. His work has been featured in The San Francisco Chronicle, the Des Moines Register, the Albuquerque Journal, the Cedar Rapids Gazette, among other publications. His artworks are included in many corporate and private collections. Robert Hoerlein’s consistent search through his work is to reduce, to eliminate everything except that which is essential, and to build an exact and unexpected relationship between very different physical and pictorial elements.
Artist Statement
In the series “none can exhaust the body” I present a drawn or painted element – a body – in a painterly space. These painted elements are formed from the material of the painting, and converge to form an oval or a convergence of lines. These are non-objective bodies; they are essential bodies. The bodies contend for authority in the real (and pictorial) space of the painting. I position elements that aren’t easily fitted together in a kind of tense co-existence. They establish very specific figure/ground relationships. My pictorial space is composed of a limited vocabulary of shapes and lines, over-painted with layers of calibrated translucency. At the point where spatial illusions begin to appear, I push the painting back towards non-representation, towards the primacy of the actual paint. I propel the painting farther into the synthetic world of painting.
