Artist Statement

For the past two years, I’ve focused primarily on painting landscapes. During this time, my approach to painting has changed decisively. Realizing that I needed to move past the confinements of a strict representational style, I have begun instead to see the possibilities that arise from letting the paint itself become the subject. Without question, the daily dance I observe between the New Mexico light and land certainly provides aesthetic and spiritual inspiration, but my approach to representing it has now become less literal. Rather, the landscape has become a way to give compositional structure to paintings that are essentially abstract. For me, the immediacy of the resulting work is both more engaging and visually evocative.
