About
Katherine Hunt attended the University of Minnesota for her BFA in Indigenous American Studies, minoring in Cultural Psychology and Women’s Studies. She received her MFA in Film/Video from the California Institute of Arts, with an emphasis on Curatorial Studies at La Cinémathèque Française in Paris, France. In 2020, Hunt received grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation for The Visual Arts/ Fulcrum Fund Grant and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Hunt’s artwork is included in exhibitions within the United States and abroad, and she is currently represented by G2 Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.
Artist Statement
Painting with fiber, I create reductive yet intricately detailed artwork that introduces a tactile element to the language of painting, elevating the line from its traditional two-dimensional plane. Working with “soft” materials adds an uncontrollable spontaneity and impermanence to my geometric compositions reminiscent of the material explorations of Post-Minimalist artwork that inspires me. Preserving the line’s course using one continuous thread, I play with conceptual potential by documenting my thought process, perspectives, and physical movements, marking my time and physical existence onto an external object. Influenced by the long northern winters of my childhood, in which landscapes enveloped in the fog of snow created a heightened sensory awareness that allowed the most nuanced details to become visible, in limiting my palette to shades of white, I create work in which tonal and textural complexities become perceptible with patient observation. Amidst our overly saturated, hectic environments, through slowing down with careful examination, it is my hope that this work will reward viewers with a sharpened visual perspective and a centered, calm psychological state.
