About

Listen…I’m not really trying to paint anything but when I look back at the work, I see all the elements of this place I live. What stands out to me is an underlying order, a foundation that is evident but obscured. So, perhaps, the work is more about the tool and the paint or gesso and responding to what happens in the moment. I come to painting from a background in environmental systems and architecture. Certainly, that practice and study influences this work. It is processional and iterative and I’m aware of avoiding the impulse to impart compositional strictures.

Many days begin with a hike down into the Rio Grande Gorge. It is very clear to me that the the order, structure and erosive processes of the gorge walls are evident in this work.

Artist Statement

Home lies at 7600’, in an ancient sagebrush-filled lake bed, at the foot of a dormant volcano, on the edge of an 800’ deep gorge, … THIS is a place of contradiction where entire mountains float in the sky, Fata Morgana mirages have Japanese Pagodas appearing on the horizon and scrims of cloud and rain make mountains disappear and reappear within moments. Regardless of what I’m working on, it is steeped in the language of this landscape.
