About
Isaac AlaridPease was raised in a hundreds-year-old exposed adobe home in Northern New Mexico. His childhood cartooning tendencies have morphed into abstract expressionist New Southwest paintings that are inspired by the visual, auditory and textural complexities of living in multicultural urban and rural environments; trash strewn streets, graffiti gracing the decrepit surfaces of worn-out buildings, dramatic sunsets and glorious skies. Isaac earned his BFA from UNM in 1998 and his MA in Art Education from UNM in 2013. His work has been shown at Mariposa Gallery in Albuquerque, NM and Rising Moon Gallery in Abiquiu, NM. In 2016, Isaac was selected as a Scholastic Arts Golden Resident at the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Residency in New Berlin, NY.
Artist Statement
My acrylic-on-wood paintings are often inspired by a synthesis of dust filled, graffiti strewn, worn out life in the contemporary southwest, and the neo primitive and abstract expressionist traditions of the mid 20th Century. This collision of time and influence results in richly layered images that create a bright and gritty New Southwest aesthetic. My sunset palettes and playful mark making are often balanced by contemplative undertones and result in paintings that are intuitive, visceral, process driven and relevant to today’s audience.
