Based in Santa Fe, NM, Emily enjoys a multitude of mediums for artistic expression, but specifically thrives when working on embroidery, ceramics, and oil painting. Being self taught, she pulls from her scientific background as inspiration for macro and microscopic views of the world, real or imagined. Working with several other local artists, she runs Clown School Gallery in downtown Santa Fe, which strives to feature contemporary/off-beat art in a city saturated with cowboy paintings.
Artist Statement
In the natural, microscopic, and transcendental realms, an infinite number of system driven processes simultaneously take place, allowing for life to exist while remaining hidden from the scope of our visual and conceptual perception. Drawing from my background in wildlife ecology, cellular biology and systems-focused ideology, I expand these indistinct processes in a colorful, texturally exciting way. The medium of embroidery lends itself well to the precision, motion, and playfulness inherent in life’s complexly simple operations. Using an array of stitches to create textural variation within a piece, I transform the straight line of a thread into dynamic, rich movement, while limited color palettes allow for a chaos that hints at enormous diversity without overwhelming the senses. My scientific education structures the pieces in a logical, believable way, adding undercurrents of substance to an imagined dimension of life.
