Chelsea Wrightson (1986) is an Albuquerque, NM based multimedia artist and mother whose practice includes painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics. Wrightson is fascinated by the physics of vision and its intersection with consciousness. She creates compositions that combine imagery from her vivid dreams and meditations. Her work moves towards symmetry and balance yet she celebrates imperfection because she sees it as a portal; without it, she would have no cause to continue dreaming. Wrightson has exhibited nationally in Albuquerque, Taos, NM, Seattle, WA and New York, NY. Her work has been written about in Southwest Contemporary and the Albuquerque Journal.
Artist Statement
The human psyche, a small fractal of the universe, is mostly uncharted and unnameable. When we choose to point our attention somewhere it beams a light into the dark matter. We grow with unquantifiable things like love and feeling and magic. The revolution we seek in our outer spaces comes from a spiritual place within: a meadow of the heart. The work I create tends to this inner knowing. It is my calm response to the maintained order, a way to imagine a world outside the current systems that narrowly focus on the few. I offer my attention to the interconnected, dynamic world of living beings, the broader picture of the universe, implicit and untraceable. In times of upheaval or collapse of governance it is natural for humans to create balance and harmony in our own ways. The members of the Transcendentalist Painting Group were also working in a time of global discord and seeking beyond what appeared in front of them. I connect with their ideas of painting and desire to continue their conversations of materializing the unknown.
