Artist Statement
Zaguán is a classical Arabic word that reached the Hispanic Arabic world and then into our language in the Southwest with the sense of” entrance or a passageway” leading into the inner courtyard. As an architectural connotation, Zaguán is a spacial passage and metaphorically, the Zaguán paintings are portals into the inner life. Geometrical abstract shapes with overlapping patterns and colors are the formative attributes of the series. Reds, greens, and browns predominate with off-whites and exposed natural linen playing off one another to form volumetric shapes.
